Introduction

In a galaxy filled with Jedi, Sith, and bounty hunters, one character stands out not for his Force abilities or royal lineage, but for his unwavering loyalty, leadership, heart (not to mention his iconic clone trooper armor)—Captain Rex.

As a clone trooper, Rex was born to fight, engineered for war, and trained to follow orders without question. But he was so much more than just a good soldier. Over the course of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Rebels, and beyond, he became a symbol of free will, brotherhood, and resistance against tyranny.

Rex’s journey is one of the most compelling in Star Wars, and he’s earnestly one of my favorite characters of all time. Introduced in The Clone Wars as the trusted second-in-command to Anakin Skywalker, he quickly became a fan-favorite for his tactical brilliance, battlefield experience, and deep camaraderie with his fellow clones.

Unlike many of his brothers, Rex actually questioned the nature of the war from time to time, grappled with moral dilemmas, and ultimately defied the system that created him. He played a pivotal role in resisting Order 66 in the final season of the animated series, survived the rise of the Empire, and later fought alongside the Rebel Alliance against the tyranny of the Emperor.

He may have even been in Return of the Jedi…but we’ll get to that.

Rex’s legacy doesn’t just live on in the stories—his impact on all of us fans is undeniable. He remains one of the most beloved characters in Star Wars, inspiring discussions, fan theories, and passionate debates about the nature of warfare, brotherhood, and beyond.

The speculations surrounding him focus mainly on his potential return in live-action, with Temuera Morrison—who played Jango Fett and the clones in the Prequels as well as Boba Fett in recent shows—being the prime candidate to portray him in future Star Wars projects. Meanwhile, Rex’s popularity has also cemented his place as a Star Wars collectibles icon, with highly sought-after Black Series figures, Funko Pop! vinyls, and Lego minifigures becoming must-haves for collectors.

This ultimate guide to Captain Rex will explore his history, key battles, relationships, merchandise, and even a few unanswered questions. Whether you’re a longtime fan like me or just discovering the character through The Clone Wars or even Ahsoka, this article will break down everything you need to know about one of Star Wars’ most legendary clone troopers.

CT-7567 himself. Or as I prefer to call him…Captain Rex.

History of Captain Rex

Captain Rex’s journey is one of the most fascinating in Star Wars, spanning the Clone Wars, the rise of the Empire, and the Rebellion against it. From his early days as a clone bred for war alongside the Jedi Order to his eventual battle for freedom in the face of unimaginable tyranny, Rex’s story is filled with epic Star Wars action and deep, psychological questions about the cost of war and the identity of a soldier.

“A timeline chart showing Captain Rex’s appearances across Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Rebels, Return of the Jedi, and Ahsoka.”

Early Life and Training

Born as CT-7567 on the stormy ocean world of Kamino, Captain Rex was initially engineered to serve in the Grand Army of the Republic. Like all clones, he was created from the genetic template of the bounty hunter Jango Fett, but also like all clones, he was an individual whose training and experiences set him apart.

“Jedi Masters and Kaminoans oversee the massive clone army in training, a pivotal moment in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones.”

Lucasfilm

From a young age, Rex was identified as an elite soldier, receiving Advanced Recon Commando (ARC) training to prepare him for leadership. His exceptional skills and strategic thinking earned him command over the 501st Legion, one of the Republic’s most renowned battalions led by the legendary Anakin Skywalker.

Now being part of the 501st could’ve given Rex his trademark blue coloring, but there’s a much cooler design marker that helps the captain stand out amongst the entirety of the army: Rex’s helmet bore the Jaig Eyes, a Mandalorian symbol of honor awarded for bravery in battle. Even before I knew anything about Rex’s future storylines

Just Tell Me to Jump – The Clone Wars Begin

Rex made his first major appearance in Star Wars: The Clone Wars during the Battle of Christophsis, a crucial early engagement in the war. Fighting in the Grand Army of the Republic, Rex served alongside Jedi Generals Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi, leading his troops in repelling a Separatist droid invasion.

It was during this battle that Rex met Ahsoka Tano, Anakin’s new Padawan and a kid that would change Star Wars history forever. Their introduction set the stage for one of Star Wars’ most enduring partnerships that would last throughout the Clone Wars and even into future Star Wars projects.

At first, Rex was skeptical of the young Jedi, but she quickly proved herself in combat as not simply one of the children, and their bond was solidified. These two are both in my top 5 Star Wars characters that the saga has ever produced, and it’s no wonder that they share so much screen time together. Sure, they’re phenomenal characters on their own, but when their stories intertwine…it’s hard for anyone to beat them.

Now despite being trained to follow orders without question, Rex’s experiences in the war began to challenge his beliefs. He witnessed the Republic’s flaws firsthand, sparking the first seeds of doubt about the system he served - a storyline that would continue throughout the entirety of The Clone Wars.

Rex and the Deserter – A Defining Moment

One of Rex’s most profound encounters came on the planet Saleucami, where he met Cut Lawquane, a former clone trooper turned clone deserter who had left the army to start a family. At first, Rex viewed Cut as a traitor—abandoning his duty, after all, was unthinkable.

However, their conversation forced Rex to confront a difficult truth: clones were individuals capable of making their own choices - a sentiment shared in the very first story arc by Jedi General Plo Koon. While he ultimately chose to stay in the war, this moment planted the idea that loyalty wasn’t just about following orders—it was about doing what was right.

This internal conflict would shape many of Rex’s future decisions, especially as the war neared its devastating conclusion.

Shinies – Rex’s Leadership and Growth

Throughout the Clone Wars, Captain Rex took on the role of mentor to many younger clones, often referred to as shinies due to their untested armor, showcasing Rex’s tactical decisions and leadership skills. As captain, he trained and battled alongside soldiers like Fives and Echo, helping them grow into some of the Republic’s most capable troopers.

Alongside these shinies and veterans alike, Rex played a major role in almost countless battles across the galaxy, many of which were included in the animated series, including:

  • The Second Battle of Geonosis – A brutal conflict against a resurgent Separatist force.

  • The Battle of Ryloth – Helping liberate the Twi’lek homeworld from occupation.

  • The Defense of Kamino – Defending his birthplace from an all-out attack.

However, one of Rex’s greatest tests (and one of my favorite arcs in the animated series) came during the Battle of Umbara, where he served under Jedi General Pong Krell. Krell’s ruthless tactics led to unnecessary clone casualties, and Rex was forced to question his superior’s orders. Eventually, he and his men uncovered Krell’s treachery—the general was secretly sabotaging the Republic, and Captain Rex led the campaign to formally arrest Krell in order to help spare the other clones.

“Captain Rex and clone troopers confront Pong Krell in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, showing the tension between the Jedi general and the Clones”

This battle and mutiny of a commander cemented Rex’s belief that loyalty to his brothers mattered more than blind obedience. Than just being a “good soldier”. It was a massive turning point in his journey toward independence and remains one of the most impactful arcs in the entire show.

Plan of Dissent – Discovering the Truth Behind Order 66

As the Clone Wars neared its end, Rex found himself at the center of a shocking conspiracy. His close friend, Fives, uncovered a secret inhibitor chip implanted in every clone, designed to force them to execute Order 66—a command that would turn them against the Jedi.

“A close-up of a clone trooper with a tear in his eye, symbolizing the emotional depth and loss experienced during the Clone Wars.”

Lucasfilm

Although Fives was killed before he could expose the full truth to the other clones, his warning stayed with Rex. During the Siege of Mandalore, Rex was among the first clones to resist Order 66, thanks to his friendship with Ahsoka Tano which allowed him to resist long enough for her to remove his chip before he could carry out the deadly command.

Together, Rex and Ahsoka battled their way through their brainwashed clone brothers, ultimately escaping into exile as the Republic collapsed and the Empire rose.

This moment marked the end of the Clone Wars, the Grand Army of the Republic, and the life Captain Rex had known for so many years. As the years have gone on, some fans have gotten a bit sick of seeing Order 66 play out, but Rex’s strength in holding out for as long as he did remains one of the most striking moments in the entire animated series and Star Wars as a whole.

Spy in the Ranks – The Rebellion and Beyond

Following the fall of the Republic, Clone Captain Rex went into hiding, attempting to help others whenever possible. He was able to briefly unite with The Bad Batch, a group of specialized clone soldiers, to help carry out missions to assist the burgeoning Rebellion - eventually teaming up with Echo, a clone he met all the way back in the early days of the war.

Now here’s where we find a slight gap in Rex’s story. While we know that he works with Echo for a while, there’s a bit of time where Rex’s life is a mystery, but eventually, he’s found living in seclusion with fellow clone survivors Gregor and Wolffe.

“Captain Rex, Gregor, and Wolffe saluting in Star Wars Rebels, showcasing the survival of these veteran clone troopers after the Clone Wars.”

Lucasfilm

As we see in Star Wars Rebels, he eventually joined up with the Rebel Alliance, assisting Ezra Bridger, Kanan Jarrus, and the Ghost crew in their fight against the Empire. Though older and weary from years of battle, Rex’s skills remained sharp, and he played a crucial role in several key missions.

Perhaps one of the most debated theories about Rex’s later years is whether he was present at the Battle of Endor. This may seem a bit out of left field, but a white-bearded Rebel known as Nik Sant appears among the strike team in Return of the Jedi, and Dave Filoni has hinted over the years that this could be Rex.

Fans like myself adore this theory not purely because of Rex, but also because this allows for the possibility of more clone integration into the larger saga. This presents the hope that they weren’t just discarded after their service, and they were able to enjoy full lives - even if that meant becoming a commander again to rise up against the Empire.

While his ultimate fate remains unknown, one thing is certain: Captain Rex’s legacy lives on. From a loyal soldier to a free-thinking warrior, he represents the heart and soul of the clones, proving that identity is more than just a number.

Final Thoughts

Captain Rex’s history is one of growth, loyalty, and defiance. From the battlefields of the Clone Wars to the front lines of the Rebellion, his journey embodies the struggle for free will in a galaxy built on control. Whether we see him again in live-action or not, his story remains one of the most powerful in Star Wars—and his legend continues to inspire fans across generations.

Key Relationships

Rex was defined throughout his career not only by his service to the Republic or his willingness to fight back against the Empire, but also by the key relationships with his commanders, other clones, and more that ended up being some of the best in all of Star Wars.

Anakin Skywalker – Master. Commander. Friend.

Rex served directly under Anakin Skywalker, and their relationship was one of mutual trust and respect. While Anakin was technically his superior, the two often operated as equals in the field.

“Anakin Skywalker and Captain Rex stand side by side, highlighting their strong bond as commander and captain in The Clone Wars.”

Lucasfilm

Unlike many Jedi, Anakin saw Rex as more than just another clone—he was a trusted ally and friend. This bond made Anakin’s fall to Darth Vader all the more tragic, as Rex was one of the few people who fought alongside him without knowing his dark fate.

Ahsoka Tano – His Most Meaningful Relationship in the Galaxy

While Anakin was Rex’s commander, Ahsoka Tano became his most trusted companion. They formed a deep bond over the course of the Clone Wars, and their final mission together during the Siege of Mandalore was one of the most emotional moments in Star Wars history.

Ahsoka was the one who saved Rex from Order 66, removing his inhibitor chip before he could fully turn on her. Their friendship endured beyond the war, and Rex later reunited with her during Star Wars:Rebels.

If Rex ever appears in Ahsoka Season 2, their relationship will likely be a major focus, as Ahsoka continues to grapple with her past.

Clone Troopers – His Deep Bond with His Brothers, Especially Fives and Echo

Unlike some Jedi generals, Rex genuinely cared for the clones under his command as we see in his mission to arrest Krell on Umbara. He believed they were more than just soldiers—they were brothers.

His strongest bonds were with clones like Fives and Echo, who shared his growing distrust of the system that created them. Rex fought alongside them in some of the most intense battles of the Clone Wars, and their deaths and sacrifices deeply affected him.

“Commander Cody, Captain Rex, Fives, and Echo pose together in front of a Republic gunship in a stylized holographic display from Star Wars: The Clone Wars.”

Lucasfilm

When Echo was presumed dead after a mission, Rex took it hard. Years later, when Echo was found alive in The Bad Batch, it was an emotional reunion—further proving how much Rex valued his fellow clones.

“Captain Rex and Echo stand side by side in The Bad Batch, highlighting their shared history and brotherhood as clones.”

Lucasfilm

Commander Cody – A Friendship with a Tragic Contrast

Rex and Commander Cody were often seen together throughout the Clone Wars. While they fought in different legions—Cody serving under Obi-Wan Kenobi and Rex under Anakin Skywalker—the two shared a mutual respect.

However, their paths took drastically different turns. While Rex was able to resist Order 66, Cody fully carried out the Emperor’s command, leading the attack on Obi-Wan Kenobi.

In The Bad Batch, we see hints that Cody may have begun to question the Empire, but unlike Rex, he was unable to escape under much later - going AWOL in the night after a final mission. This tragic divide between two close friends highlights the heartbreaking fate of the clones—some found freedom, while others remained trapped in the system until it was almost too late.

“Side-by-side comparison of Rex and Cody after Order 66, showing the difference in their paths.”

Lucasfilm

Cut Lawquane – The Deserter Who Changed His Perspective

One of Rex’s most important encounters came when he met Cut Lawquane, a clone who abandoned the war to live a peaceful life with a family.

At first, Rex struggled to accept that a clone would desert his duty, but after spending time with Cut, he began to question whether clones truly had a choice in their own destiny.

This experience planted the seed for Rex’s later rebellion against the Empire, showing him that loyalty wasn’t just about following orders—it was about doing what was right.

Captain Rex in Live-Action & Future Star Wars Projects

Captain Rex has remained a fan-favorite character since his debut in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and with the expansion of live-action Star Wars storytelling, many fans were eager to see him brought to life outside of animation.

And we got our wish.

With characters like Ahsoka Tano and Bo-Katan Kryze successfully making the leap to live-action in The Mandalorian, Captain Rex made his grand entrance during a flashback sequence in season 1 of Ahsoka. Even though it was just a brief cameo, the thrill of seeing Rex in his full clone trooper armor charging behind his friends was almost indescribable.

But because I am a greedy Star Wars fan, the second that he left the screen, I already began thinking about the future. And it turns out, I wasn’t the only one.

Will Captain Rex Be in Ahsoka Season 2? What We Know So Far

With Ahsoka Season 2 in development, one of the biggest questions among fans is whether Captain Rex will make an appearance. Given his deep connection to Ahsoka Tano, it would make sense for him to be part of her continuing story, but naturally, it all depends on the logistics of the story that Dave Filoni wants to tell.

In Ahsoka Season 1, Ahsoka is seen reflecting on her past and carrying the lessons of her Clone Wars experience into the fight against Grand Admiral Thrawn. Since Rex was her closest clone ally—and one of the few survivors of Order 66—his presence could serve as an emotional anchor for her character if they want to bring him in.

So far, Lucasfilm has not confirmed Rex’s involvement in Season 2, but Temuera Morrison, who has played Jango Fett, Boba Fett, and live-action clones in previous projects, is rumored to return. Given his connection to the clones, Morrison would be the natural choice to portray Rex as he has already played a veteran clone in Obi-Wan Kenobi alongside his roles in the Fett family.

However, even if Ahsoka does not include Rex in Season 2, there are still plenty of opportunities for his story to continue elsewhere in live-action.

Could Captain Rex Appear in Future Star Wars Projects?

Beyond Ahsoka, there are multiple upcoming Star Wars projects where Captain Rex could realistically appear.

Dave Filoni’s MandoVerse Film

Lucasfilm has confirmed that Dave Filoni will direct a crossover film tying together characters from The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, The Book of Boba Fett, and more. Since Filoni was instrumental in creating Captain Rex, it’s possible he could include the character in this movie, either as a veteran warrior advising Ahsoka and the Mandalorians or as part of a flashback exploring the fate of clones post-Empire.

A Captain Rex & Clone Wars Spin-Off

With The Bad Batch wrapped up and an increased focus on clone characters in recent storytelling, a live-action series or special focusing on Captain Rex and other surviving clones could be an exciting possibility. A show exploring the remaining clones post-Empire, their struggles with aging, and their role in the galaxy, including Rex’s experiences and contributions, would be a unique addition to the Star Wars timeline.

Could Temuera Morrison Play an Older Captain Rex?

If Captain Rex does appear in live-action, Temuera Morrison is the obvious and perfect choice to play him. Morrison has already portrayed Jango Fett, Boba Fett, and various clone troopers in Obi-Wan Kenobi, so seeing him take on the role of Rex would be both fitting and exciting for fans.

Morrison himself has expressed interest in playing more clone characters, and since Captain Rex has a distinct personality and leadership style, it would give him another chance to bring depth to a beloved role.

Potential ways Morrison could portray Rex:

  • A war-weary, older version of Rex working with Ahsoka and the New Republic.

  • A flashback to the Clone Wars, showing a younger Rex leading troops.

  • A cameo appearance, confirming his survival beyond Rebels and Return of the Jedi.

If the fan theories about Rex being Nik Sant at the Battle of Endor are ever confirmed, Morrison could also appear in a Return of the Jedi-era flashback or epilogue.

Final Thoughts: The Future of Captain Rex in Live-Action

While nothing has been officially announced, the possibility of Captain Rex appearing in live-action is stronger than ever. Whether it’s in Ahsoka Season 2, a MandoVerse film, or a dedicated spin-off, his deep connections to Ahsoka, the clones, and the Rebellion make him a prime candidate for a live-action return.

With Temuera Morrison already involved in various Star Wars projects, fans are hopeful that it’s only a matter of time before we see Captain Rex brought to life on screen—armor, Jaig Eyes, and all.

Frequently Asked Questions About Captain Rex

As one of the most beloved characters in Star Wars, Captain Rex has inspired countless fan theories, discussions, and debates. From his fate after Order 66 to his potential live-action debut, there are many questions surrounding his story. Below, we answer some of the most frequently asked questions about Captain Rex.

Who Plays Captain Rex?

Voiced by Dee Bradley Baker in Animation

Captain Rex, like all clone troopers in Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars Rebels, is voiced by Dee Bradley Baker. His performance brought Rex to life, giving him a distinctive personality, leadership style, and emotional depth that set him apart from other clones.

Could Temuera Morrison Play Him in Live-Action?

If Captain Rex appears fully unmasked in live-action, Temuera Morrison is the most likely actor to portray him. Morrison, who originally played Jango Fett in Attack of the Clones, has already appeared as Boba Fett and various clones in The Mandalorian, The Book of Boba Fett, and Obi-Wan Kenobi.

Given Rex’s age by the time of the Rebellion, Morrison would be the perfect fit to play him in Ahsoka or other live-action projects.

Did Captain Rex Die?

Captain Rex’s exact fate remains unknown, but we do know that he survived the Clone Wars, Order 66, and the rise of the Empire.

Rex Fought at the Battle of Endor

One of the biggest confirmations of Rex’s survival comes from Star Wars:Rebels, where he joins the Rebel Alliance. In later material, Dave Filoni confirmed that Rex fought in the Battle of Endor, helping the Rebels defeat the Empire in Return of the Jedi.

His Ultimate Fate Is Still a Mystery

While we know he fought for the Rebellion, what happens to Rex after Endor is unknown. Some believe he retired peacefully, while others speculate that he may appear in future Star Wars stories.

How Old Is Captain Rex?

Clone troopers were engineered to age at twice the normal rate, making them biologically older than their actual years lived.

  • During The Clone Wars – Rex is around 10 years old, but his body is closer to 20 due to accelerated aging.

  • During Revenge of the Sith – He’s about 13 years old (biologically 26).

  • By Return of the Jedi – Rex is around 36 years old, but physically he’s closer to 72.

Despite his accelerated aging, Rex remains a skilled warrior, continuing to fight for freedom well into his later years.

What Happened to Captain Rex After Order 66?

Unlike most clones, Rex resisted Order 66 thanks to Ahsoka Tano, who removed his inhibitor chip before he could turn against her. After escaping the Republic’s destruction, Rex:

  • Went into hiding to avoid the newly formed Galactic Empire.

  • Lived in exile with fellow clones Gregor and Wolffe.

  • Eventually joined the Rebellion, fighting alongside Hera Syndulla, Ezra Bridger, and Kanan Jarrus in Star Wars Rebels.

His ability to break free from his programming made him one of the few clones to survive with his free will intact.

Is Captain Rex an ARC Trooper?

Although Rex trained with ARC troopers and adopted some of their tactics, he was never officially ranked as an ARC trooper. Instead, he was promoted directly to Captain and later Commander during the Siege of Mandalore.

However, Rex’s combat skills, leadership, and strategic mind made him just as effective—if not more so—than many ARC troopers in the field.

Where Was Captain Rex During Revenge of the Sith?

During the events of Revenge of the Sith, Rex was:

  • Leading the 501st Legion alongside Ahsoka Tano during the Siege of Mandalore.

  • Fighting against Maul’s forces, unaware of what was happening to the Jedi elsewhere.

  • Caught in Order 66, but ultimately freed from its control by Ahsoka.

This means Rex was not present on Coruscant or involved in the Jedi Temple massacre like other members of the 501st.

Is Captain Rex in Return of the Jedi?

There is a long-running fan theory that Captain Rex appears in Return of the Jedi as a bearded Rebel soldier on Endor, known in previous canon as Nik Sant.

“A side-by-side comparison of Nik Sant from Return of the Jedi and Captain Rex from Star Wars Rebels, fueling theories that Rex fought at Endor.”

Lucasfilm

While the original film never identified this soldier as Rex, Dave Filoni later hinted that it could be him, further fueling speculation.

Although Lucasfilm has not officially confirmed this, it has become a widely accepted theory among fans, aligning with Filoni’s confirmation that Rex was present at the Battle of Endor.

What Is Captain Rex’s Rank?

Captain Rex began his service as a Clone Captain (CT-7567) of the 501st Legion, serving directly under Anakin Skywalker.

During the Siege of Mandalore, Ahsoka Tano promoted him to Clone Commander to lead the assault against Maul’s forces. However, Rex never fully accepted the title, as he did not want to outrank his fellow clones.

Despite his official rank, Rex was one of the most respected leaders among clone troopers, often viewed as an equal to Jedi generals in battle.

Will Captain Rex Be in Ahsoka Season 2?

There is no official confirmation that Captain Rex will appear in Ahsoka Season 2, but several clues suggest it’s possible:

  • Ahsoka and Rex’s deep bond makes him a natural fit for flashbacks or present-day appearances.

  • Temuera Morrison is rumored to return for Ahsoka and has played clones before.

  • Filoni has teased Rex’s future, without revealing specific details.

If Captain Rex does appear, it could be in:

  • Clone Wars flashbacks, revisiting key moments between Ahsoka and Rex.

  • A present-day storyline, where an older Captain Rex helps Ahsoka in her search for Thrawn.

While nothing is confirmed yet, Captain Rex’s connection to Ahsoka makes his return one of the most anticipated possibilities in live-action Star Wars.

Final Thoughts: The Legacy of Captain Rex

I didn’t meet Captain Rex until much later in my Star Wars journey. I put off watching The Clone Wars for many years (for no good reason), but ever since I corrected that mistake, I’ve been unable to imagine Star Wars without him.

From his origins as a loyal soldier to his rebellion against the Empire, Captain Rex’s story is filled with heroism, brotherhood, and independence.

Whether you’re wondering about his fate, collectibles, or potential live-action future, Captain Rex remains one of the most fascinating and enduring characters in Star Wars. As more stories unfold in the galaxy, all of us fans are eagerly waiting to see where Captain Rex’s journey will take him next.

Conclusion

Captain Rex is more than just another clone—he is a symbol of loyalty, leadership, and independence in the Star Wars universe. From his early days as a by-the-book soldier to his eventual defiance of Order 66 and his fight for freedom, his story is one of the most compelling character arcs in the franchise.

What makes Rex so beloved is his humanity. Despite being bred for war, he developed his own moral code, proving that clones were more than just soldiers—they were individuals with choices, emotions, and the ability to shape their own destinies. His friendships with Anakin Skywalker, Ahsoka Tano, and his fellow clone troopers added emotional depth to his journey, making his character feel real and relatable.

Rex’s impact goes beyond the Clone Wars. He survived the rise of the Empire, joined the Rebel Alliance, and even fought at the Battle of Endor, cementing his legacy as a warrior who fought for the greater good. His continued popularity in collectibles, merchandise, and fan theories only proves how much he means to the Star Wars community.
