Their conflicting philosophies on how to fight the Empire created one of the biggest ideological divides within the Rebellion and almost destroyed any chance the galaxy had of lasting peace.

Mon Mothma and Saw Gerrera had the same ultimate goal: defeating the Empire and restoring freedom to the galaxy. However, their methods and beliefs about how to wage war were completely different.

Mothma was a firm believer in efforts founded in diplomacy and strategic resistance. She sought to rally systems to the Rebellion by appealing to their sense of justice and ensuring that the fight against the Empire remained morally justified. She opposed reckless violence, fearing that unnecessary bloodshed would make the Rebel Alliance no better than the Empire it sought to overthrow. To Mon Mothma, the Rebellion needed to represent the future of democracy, not just the destruction of tyranny.

Saw Gerrera, on the other hand, took a slightly different path. As we first saw in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, this freedom fighter saw the war against the Empire as an all-or-nothing fight that required any means necessary.

After all, he had fought aside the Republic during the Clone Wars, and he saw firsthand how easy it was for a loyal ally to become a vicious foe. Therefore, he was willing to use terrorist-like tactics, sabotage, and assassinations to strike fear into his enemy.

So you could see how these folks wouldn’t exactly have the most pleasant dinner party conversation.

While Mothma sought unity and legitimacy, Saw believed the only way to win was through ruthless, direct attacks—even if it meant civilian casualties. His extreme methods caused many within the Rebellion to view him as a liability rather than an ally, which is why Mon and Bail Organa were forced to enlist the help of Jyn Erso to even get Saw to talk to them when it came to obtaining the Death Star plans.

Their conflicting leadership styles created deep divisions within the Rebel movement, with Saw’s Partisans operating outside the command of the official Rebel Alliance, and despite the eventual victorious outcome, it’s not hard to see many cracks that could have broken the entire Rebellion apart.

The Breaking Point: Saw Gerrera Becomes an Outcast

The divide between Mon Mothma and Saw Gerrera eventually became irreparable.

In Star Wars Rebels, Mon Mothma publicly condemned Saw, making it clear that his methods did not reflect the values of the Rebel Alliance. She saw his brutality as a threat to the Rebellion’s reputation, fearing that using the same fear tactics as the Empire would cost them crucial allies.

By the time of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, the split between them was undeniable:

On the one hand, Mon Mothma’s approach ensured that the Rebel Alliance remained a legitimate government-in-exile, gaining widespread support and eventually defeating the Empire through strategic military campaigns. However, Saw’s uncompromising aggression meant that he struck some of the earliest and most devastating blows against the Empire, weakening it from within while Mothma was stuck in meetings.

Ultimately, history sided with Mon Mothma. And while I can definitely see that from a moralistic storytelling perspective—her leadership helped form the New Republic, while Saw’s reckless methods led to his isolation and eventual downfall–there is an undeniable truth that rises above the tumultuous nature of their relationship.

Fighting tyranny is never simple, and even those on the same side may disagree on how to achieve victory.

Her husband, Perrin Fertha, was the opposite of everything she stood for—a man more concerned with luxury and status than politics. Genevieve O’Reilly is a powerhouse throughout the entirety of the television series, but this particular sequence stopped me in my tracks the first time that I saw it. I mean this was a senator that had to gaze into the eyes of unimaginable horrors throughout the Clone Wars, but when Mothma realizes that her own daughter is about to become the younger version of the Mothma that she always feared, Genevieve O’Reilly says more with silence than most could with a monologue.

Nonetheless, she goes through with it and ultimately proves that nothing is off the table if it’s done in the name of galactic liberation.
