In honor of the 25th anniversary of The Phantom Menace, StarWars.com has produced a new feature surrounding the iconic designer of Darth Maul, Queen Amidala, and more!
Behind the scenes:
McCaig discusses the design process of Darth Maul, Padmé Amidala, Obi-Wan and more!
George Lucas asked McCaig to create “a vision from your worst nightmare” for Maul, and after seeing it, amended his request to “give me your second worst nightmare”
Regarding Lucas’s process, McCaig claims “I've never met a director who empowered and trusted artists as much as George.”
Sneak peaks:
While writing The Phantom Menace, George would visit the artists every week to tell them the newest part of the script “like it was a bedtime story”
McCaig tried designing Maul as a woman at one point – a look Dave Filoni later used to create Mother Talzin in The Clone Wars
Originally, Qui-Gon and Obi-Wan swapped names with the Padawan adopting the mantle of “Obi-Wan” only after his master’s death at the end of the film
Looking ahead:
While McCaig has historically not personally connected with Star Wars, he claims that has changed saying “It was Andor that finally caught my heart and soul.”
He now hopes to be a part of creating the saga going forward.
