Publisher summary:
IN THE TIME BEFORE THE FORCE AWAKENS, WHERE IS THE MILLENNIUM FALCON?! Less than satisfied with a settled life, HAN SOLO lands on the idea of reclaiming the Falcon and returning to a life of adventure. The problem is, he can't find it. After enlisting a less than enthusiastic CHEWBACCA, the duo embarks upon a quest to reclaim the greatest ship in the galaxy. Standing in their way are a laundry list of rogues who have staked a claim to the Millennium Falcon as well, like the villainous scoundrel who stole the Falcon, DUCAIN.

Why it matters: For nearly ten years, we’ve been wondering how the Millennium Falcon ended up on Jakku. Buckle up - because it seems that story is finally here.

Key moments:

  • Mid-life Crisis: The quiet life of fatherhood and retirement isn’t a fit for the adventurous Han Solo. While we get some touching glimpses of his love for Ben, it’s clear that Han needs to be a thrill seeker, even in old age.

  • Old Buddies: Despite his last name, we all know that Han likes to work with friends. We get a glimpse of his continuing friendship with Lando, and the issue ends with a setup for a classic team-up with Chewbacca.

  • Filling in the Gaps: One of the age-old setups for a Star Wars story is telling a story we’ve heard about but never seen (see also: that business on Cato Neimoidia). The space between Episodes VI and VII is still wide open, and this is a great start to fleshing out that era for Han.

The big picture:

We learn in The Force Awakens that Han Solo has been without the Falcon (and Leia) for some time now, and their reunion becomes one of the strongest emotional beats of the film. Rodney Barnes and Ramon Rosanas – previously teamed up on Inquisitors – take on the task of showing us how we got to that moment. They absolutely rise to the assignment with a solid start to that adventure.

This first chapter is a relatively simple one: Han is bored with his life, he wants his ship back, and he wants to spend time with friends. Swap out the Falcon for an old convertible and you’ve got a classic American tale. On that framework, Barnes nails the story beats, but he also does admiral work at introducing us to a Han we haven’t seen before. However, it’s Lando who really shines here, as the smooth talking scoundrel has naturally adapted to his new station in life while also showing a surprisingly genuine concern for Han’s struggles.

Tucked in the final pages is the beginning of a mystery regarding the pirate Ducain, who we know ends up with the Falcon before its discovery by Rey and Finn on Jakku. This stinger, along with the promise of a buddy adventure with Chewie, teases an exciting adventure now that the setup is out of the way.

Our rating: Good
