The X-wing series is an action-packed 10-book adventure that fulfills every fan’s wildest dreams of what it was like to be a member of Rogue Squadron and, later, Wraith Squadron. Covering several large story arcs, this series basically follows the efforts of Wedge Antilles and his respective wing mates as they take the fight to what’s left of the Empire after the destruction of the second Death Star.
Technically, the X-Wing series is comprised of multiple series. The first four books focus on Corran Horn, the reformation of Rogue Squadron, and the saga of the siege of Coruscant after Return of the Jedi. From there, the next three books focus on Wraith Squadron, much more of a hodgepodge group of Rebel specialists on their last chance. The next few books are more like one-off stories following up on the Rogues, especially Wedge, in high-flying adventures full of classic Legends fun. Finally, Aaron Allston returned to Wraith Squadron in 2013 with one last X-Wing book much later in the timeline, this time following Wedge's daughter—an absolute gift to the X-Wing fans of old.
The X-Wing books are regarded as some of the very best Legends books as they perfectly capture the fun, adventurous feel of the trench run at the end of A New Hope or the Battle of Hoth. It was the first series to focus on entirely new characters, which Stackpole and Allston developed wonderfully in such a way that established several of them to stick around for years and years to come in the Legends timeline. These are great to pick up right after watching Return of the Jedi—no other Star Wars book knowledge required. There is a Rogue Squadron prequel comics series that will enhance your enjoyment of the books, but they are not a necessary read to tackle the novels.
If you're wanting space battles, cocky pilots, Star Wars without dense Force-lore and over-powered Jedi, and a series that will put a huge smile on your face for months, these are the books for you!
