Surviving Order 66 was no mean feat, but Cal Kestis did it. Like many others, his Master, Jaro Tapal, sacrificed his life to the Force so his Padawan could stay alive.
Throughout his subsequent journey, Cal rekindled his connection to the Force, embraced his role as a Jedi Knight, fought against the Empire, AND built many lightsabers.
You want one? Of course you do! Read on.
What to Consider Before Buying
Blade construction and how it illuminates: Polycarbonate tubing makes for the best blade (and is often a requirement for tournaments).
Neopixel sabers, for example, have LED strips running the length of the blade, giving you full-length illumination from hilt to tip. It also has electronics that offer more customization.
However, those features come at a cost — less expensive blades generally only light from the hilt and provide less customization, but can be more durable.
How will you use it? Decide if you want to duel with it or display it because this will matter enormously.
The aesthetics and detail should be higher for a display saber.
The durability and strength of the blade and its connections take precedence in a dueling saber.
What kind of hilt? How you want to use your saber also influences the hilt you choose.
If you're going to duel with it, choose one made from aircraft-grade aluminum alloy: it will be lightweight, durable, and rust-proof.
More premium saber hilts will be made of stainless steel, but the heavier weight might make it a better choice for display (though make sure your mounting method can hold it!).
What length of blade is best for you? Sabers come in many lengths, the most popular being 26 inches, 32 inches, or 36 inches. Consider your arm length and reach, and then how you can store the blade when not required.
Parts and warranty: It is always smart to purchase your saber from a company that can provide follow-up service and replacement parts for your new saber. After all, kyber crystals don’t just grow on trees!
Cal Kestis’s Lightsabers
Cal lost his original lightsaber, the one he had as a Padawan, during Order 66. His master, Jaro Taral, gave his battle-damaged lightsaber to Call for protection just before his death after their clone troopers' betrayal. This is the damaged saber we see at the beginning of Fallen Order (2019).
Later in Fallen Order, he journeys to Illum to find a new kyber crystal and combines Jaro Tapal’s broken lightsaber. He set about repairing and fixing it, then combined it with Cere Junda's lightsaber to form a double-bladed saberstaff that also allowed for dual-wielding. This is the weapon Cal has at the beginning of Survivor (2023).

And then he decided to go all Ren-like (or it could be the other way around!) by constructing a crossguard lightsaber. This High Republic-era Survivor saber is heavier and has a blue crossguard.

So many choices and so many awesome lightsabers! Do your research and ask for advice on Discord, as your friends in the Youtini community are here to help.
Although Cal Kestis had only one lightsaber that evolved through his Star Wars journey to include remnants from Master Tapal’s weapon, Cere’s bits and pieces, and, later, ancient crossguard components, think how impressive a wall display of four sabers would be — if your bank account can make the stretch!
Of course, that would make for a pretty full wall, with just one character’s sabers! Although Disney has a patent for a lightsaber with a retracting blade, sadly, there isn’t one on the market… at least, not yet. Hopefully, there will be someday, and think of all the sabers you can display then!
In the meantime, we wish you happy hunting and happy collecting!
