Kristin Baver recently shared a bit about the creation of the latest (and heaviest) Star Wars model over at StarWars.com, and the process included quite a few nods to the history of the franchise.

Zoom in:
Tet’niss, the mama crab from “Zero Friends Again” was created practically using stop motion animation techniques
The puppet was created by Tippett Studio in Berkely, California, who worked on the Original Trilogy
Tippet Studio, founded by legendary animator and creature creator Phil Tippett, was responsible for the animations of the tauntauns and AT-ATs as well as other famous designs like the djarik table from A New Hope, Max Rebo from Return of the Jedi, and even designs for The Force Awakens, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and The Rise of Skywalker

Deep dive:
For Tet’niss, the studio worked alongside the legendary Doug Chiang to digitally render the design before 3D printing the majority of the large pieces
The real fun began when the modelers started to “kitbash” by adding pieces of Original Trilogy model kits to enhance the chaotic look of the crab
The final design includes pieces of R2-D2, C3PO, K2SO, and more!
