Key takeaways:
Mark Hamill recently appeared on Bullseye with Jesse Thorn to promote his new film The Life of Chuck
While speaking about The Last Jedi, Hamill revealed that he was given permission to come up with his own backstory for why Luke Skywalker would leave the Jedi, and it ended up being much darker than the actual film
Hamill decided there was only one possible solution: “So he falls in love with a woman. He gives up being a Jedi. They have a child together. At some point the child, as a toddler, picks up an unattended lightsaber, pushes the button and is killed instantly. The wife is so full of grief, she kills herself.”

Looking deeper:
Hamill also spoke at length about director Rian Johnson calling him “one of the most gifted directors I’ve ever worked with” and reinforcing that “he made a great movie”
Despite his disagreement with Luke’s choices, Hamill cleared up “the fact that I went public with my dissatisfaction with the motivation for Luke becoming a suicidal hermit might have colored things in a way that, maybe I should have kept that to myself”
Finally, Hamill concluded the story by reinforcing “the only thing unfortunate about that is, I’ve heard comments from fans who think that I somehow dislike Rian Johnson, and nothing could be further from the truth.”
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is now streaming on Disney+
