Why it matters:
Once more, Kylo Ren digs into his grandfather’s history only to find himself falling short. Can the Supreme Leader ever live up to the legacy of Darth Vader?
Key moments:
Visits from beyond: Kylo taps into the Force to talk to his former master. His conversation with Luke is a perfect look at the internal struggle between Kylo Ren and Ben Solo that led us here.
Ghosts of the past: Besides just Luke, Kylo is haunted by a menagerie of familiar faces, both alive and dead. It’s a chilling bit of body horror right out of Luke’s vision on Dagobah.
Inferiority complex: This ongoing comic has been all about Kylo trying to live up to Vader’s enormous presence. He finds himself still falling short, which continues to be the driving force in his petulant rage.

The big picture:
At this point it’s no surprise when Charles Soule delivers an amazing comic. This is yet another thrilling issue of Legacy of Vader, unpacking what it is that makes Kylo Ren who he is. The recurring theme of Kylo being angry that he’s not as good as Vader could easily run stale, but Soule continues to find new corners of that same insecurity to explore.
In this issue, it’s a mystical Force journey into the afterlife that triggers Kylo’s self-hatred. Whether this visit is literal or metaphorical is up to the reader, but the end result is the same: more outrage from the Supreme Leader. This trippy quest is driven home with fantastic art by Luke Ross, who bounces between heavenly visions, creepy spectres, and the always intimidating world of Mustafar without missing a beat.
Our rating: Masterpiece.
What’s next: Kylo continues his quest for power in Legacy of Vader #11, out December 3rd.
