Why it matters: After nearly a year of one-off anthology stories, Marc Guggenheim finally begins to wrap up the continuing mystery of Qui-Gon’s assassin. Jedi Knights is a perfect blend of self-contained story and ongoing narrative.

Key moments:

  • The Lost Jedi: While it’s not the first time he’s appeared in this series, it’s always intriguing to see Dooku during his Jedi years. Despite Dooku’s wisdom, Guggenheim shows us why the former Jedi master was a prime candidate for Sith corruption.

  • Mystery revealed: Enigmatic assassin Corlis Rath was named early in this series, and now we finally know where he came from.

  • The Jedi Way: Qui-Gon, depicted here in two different eras, is the perfect foil for his former master Dooku. The two characters perfectly illustrate the two sides of the balancing act that Jedi peacekeepers must navigate.

Marvel Comics

The big picture: Jedi Knights has been a standout comic, blending high octane Jedi action with insightful discussions of the Jedi Order. For my money, it’s probably one of the best standalone Star Wars comics in years. Every issue brings a new exciting look at the golden era of the Jedi. In what seems to be the penultimate issue, that all comes to a head as Marc Guggenheim finally starts to close up the mystery that has been teased since the first issue. While the reader might not immediately feel the weight of the reveal, the way it affects our protagonist is immediately evident.

The mystery is revealed in a story that brings together past and present as Qui-Gon Jinn relives an encounter from his Padawan years. The Phantom Menace tells us that Qui-Gon is an ideal teacher, and now we see exactly why that is. He is presented with a conflict with a seemingly straightforward solution. But rather than echo the teachings of his fallen master Count Dooku, he teaches Obi-Wan Kenobi that there is always another way.

If Jedi Knights really ends next month, Guggenheim and Musabekov should be proud. Every beat of this comic has been outstanding, and it seems that they have set things up for a perfect finale.

Our rating: Incredible
