Why it matters: As Disney updates Galaxy’s Edge to include classic Original Trilogy characters, it’s only right that–in classic Star Wars fashion–we get a tie-in book to tell us how we got there.

Key moments:

  • Luke vs Boba!: What more needs to be said? While the two briefly battled once before (way back in the very first Canon comic arc!), this duel has them on even footing. Who wins the showdown of two fan favorites?

  • Visions of the past: Like Sacks’s previous Galaxy’s Edge tie-ins, Echoes of the Empire is built around a framing story set in the future. This time, our journey is guided by Rey as she seeks more Jedi training.

  • Familiar faces: Fans of the park will enjoy seeing cameos from some of their favorite characters. Dok-Ondar takes center stage as usual, but Black Spire is full of familiar faces.

The big picture: The cover of Echoes shows Luke Skywalker in his Jedi Master robes standing in front of Smuggler’s Run, almost as if posing for a vacation photo. It’s a stunning piece by Phil Noto that tells you exactly what this comic is: a day at the theme park.

The idea of a “canon” theme park experience is inherently goofy. Rebranding a section of Disney World should not require published fiction to explain why Darth Vader and Boba Fett are standing where Rey and Kylo Ren once stood. But as silly as it is, there’s something charming about it; only Star Wars would ever try to sell such a concept, and fans have embraced it.

Like the books and comics that have come before it, Echoes of the Empire is less about the story itself and more about exploring the park. The story is similar to what a group of kids might act out on a playground - Luke Skywalker is on a quest, and - oh look now he fights Boba Fett! And now comes Darth Vader!! It’s fun in a way that doesn’t take itself seriously, because it truly feels like you’re exploring Galaxy’s Edge.

Ethan Sacks delivers exactly what the book’s cover promises: a good time with classic characters.

Our rating: Good

What’s next: Vader arrives on Batuu next month in issue #2 - in stores May 27.
