Josh Gad is set to star in a sequel to 1987’s parody masterpiece, but during production, he had to update creator and producer, Mel Brooks, on the new lore!
Looking back:
Spaceballs was created by comedic legend Mel Brooks back in 1987 as a parody of the original Star Wars trilogy
The film featured a number of characters inspired by Lucas’s films including Lonestar (Han Solo), Dark Helmet (Darth Vader), Yogurt (Yoda), and even Pizza the Hutt (...you know)
While the movie didn’t find initial commercial success, it has become a cult classic in the fandom community over the last 40 years
What we know:
Josh Gad (Frozen, The Book of Mormon) is set to produce and star in a Spaceballs sequel for Amazon MGM Studios
Mel Brooks is returning to produce, but the 98 year old admittedly had not kept up with Star Wars since 1987 and asked Gad to catch him up on key in-universe events
Gad then spent 40 minutes detailing every beat of the rest of the Star Wars saga to Brooks saying “It’s literally like, I am a combat vet just going to war in front of one person.”
Following the presentation, Brooks simply responded “Wow. Josh, it really sounds like you’ve got your finger on the pulse!”
The film will be directed by Josh Greenbaum (Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar) and written by Josh Gad alongside Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit (Star Wars LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy)
