James Mangold recently sat down with MovieWeb to discuss his latest film, A Complete Unknown, and took the opportunity to shed some light on his upcoming Star Wars movie!
What’s new:
When it comes to the idea of Dawn of the Jedi, Mangold is focused on originality above all - saying "To me, the really important aspects are the freedom to make something new."
With the film being set over 25,000 years before the current era of Star Wars Canon, Mangold feels free of constraints that may have pushed him away from the project
He additionally went on to express his excitement about exploring an era that inspired him as a teenager while acknowledging the difficulty in creating current projects. “I'm not that interested in being handcuffed by so much lore at this point that it's almost immovable, and you can't please anybody."
What we know:
James Mangold’s film about the earliest era of Jedi was initially announced at Star Wars Celebration Europe back in 2023 alongside the new feature film starring Rey Skywalker as well as a conclusion to the Mandoverse directed by Dave Filoni
Mangold is working on a script alongside Beau Willimon who wrote the Narkina 5 arc of Andor including the episode “One Way Out”
The film does not currently have a release date, but fans are eager for more news as Star Wars Celebration Japan approaches this April!
