The big picture:
In the time between issues #2 and 3 of this miniseries, the entirety of Maul – Shadow Lord has been released. (And it was fantastic, by the way.) Originally this odd quirk of publishing and timing frustrated me. But reading this issue revealed a silver lining: It means we don’t have to leave the show behind just yet.
While Shadow of Maul doesn’t continue from the thrilling finale–don’t worry, no spoilers here–it expands on the story of Detective Lawson. His arc in season one drives the narrative, bringing together Jannix’s underworld, the Empire, and Maul himself. This story sets the stage for all those pieces to fall into place while also highlighting the emotional conflicts between work and personal life we see Lawson struggle with in the show.

Marvel Comics
As is standard for these tie in stories, don’t expect Shadow of Maul to drastically change the context of the show. But for people already pining for more from this world, it’s a perfect prequel. Issue #3 is lighter on the plot but still features enough action and intrigue–and a hint of Maul–to tide you over until the series returns.
Our rating: Good
What’s next: Maul’s empire building continues in Shadow of Maul #4, hitting shelves on June 10th.
