Michael Reaves's trilogy set in the Dark Times in the Coruscant Underworld is one of the only Legends trilogies with a core cast of original characters written by a singular author from beginning to end! For the longest time, George Lucas had decreed the period between Episodes III and IV off-limits to storytellers. . . Until the release of Revenge of the Sith, that is. Then the floodgates were opened. Coruscant Nights, released in the mid-to-late 2000s, was essentially our first glimpse into a Jedi's struggle to survive after surviving Order 66.
In some ways, Coruscant Nights is a follow-up to Michael Reaves's previous Star Wars books—the absolute masterpiece that is Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter as well as the Medstar Duology. Reaves built a shared universe among his titles with a connected cast of characters and an ongoing story amidst multiple series. While not necessary to dive into the Coruscant Nights books, we recommend reading those three books before this trilogy. Then, you'll definitely want to read The Last Jedi, which is an extension of the trilogy with the same characters!
Jax Pavan is the main character, surrounded by a team of misfits—a semi-sentient droid, a Sullustan journalist, a Zeltron art collector, a Twileck anti-establishment Jedi, and even a former aide to Darth Vader. This series is thrilling: packed with suspense, humor, intrigue, and surprises. He borrows a noir-detective style for the motley crew's underground Jedi detective agency. Each book in the trilogy has its own unique story within the trilogy's overarching story. For example, Captain Typho goes toe-to-toe with Aurra Sing and Pavan and his crew are hunted by Inquisitors.
Coruscant Nights is one of the under-the-radar Legends series, but one that is a heartbreaking and humorous adventure through the darker haunts of the galactic capital and is definitely worth a read.
