tar Wars Celebration Europe 2023 entered its third day on April 9, 2023 at the ExCeL Centre in London. Fans of the books and comics had a lot to look forward to with a Dark Horse Comics panel and a Lucasfilm Publishing panel. Riding the excitement from the massive amount of announcements from The High Republic (which you can read about here), fans were curious to see what new announcements the creators of various books and comics had up their sleeves.
Hyperspace Stories: Dark Horse Comics Returns
Michael Siglain, the Creative Director at Lucasfilm Publishing, hosted the panel called Hyperspace Stories: Dark Horse Comics Returns. The panelists included editor Matt Dryer, author Cavan Scott, author Daniel José Older, author George Mann, author Claudia Gray, and artist Nick Brokenshire.
With Cavan Scott's notorious love of the character Jaxxon, it's no surprise that he started the panel by discussing the upcoming issue called Star Wars Hyperspace Stories: Jaxxon Annual 2023. Some concept and interior art from Nick Brokenshire were shown. Two variant covers by Joëlle Jones and Sergio Aragonés for the annual were revealed as well.
Also by Scott is the Tales from the Death Star graphic novel. A cover by Ingo Römling was revealed, as well as some story details. Readers can expect to find a Tarkin story called "The Haunting of Grand Moff Tarkin" and a dianoga story, among others. Of note, the cover also shows Palpatine and Vader, as well as ghost versions of Jedi Vectors from The High Republic. The story with the Vectors will be called "Wild Squadron." This hardcover graphic novel will go on sale in September 2023.
Another cover reveal was shown from Hyperspace Stories #9, drawn by Cary Nord. The issue is written by MIchael Moreci with art by Nick Brokenshire. The cover shows Jedi Quinlan Vos going up against the bounty hunter Cad Bane. Some concept art for the issue was shown as well.
The panel then moved into content from The High Republic. Quest of the Jedi, a one-shot comic by Claudia Gray with art by Fico Ossio, was first to be discussed. Despite delay after delay after delay, it is apparently still moving forward. Four pages of interiors were shown as well. This one-shot will take place prior to any story seen thus far from The High Republic.
Also from The High Republic is The High Republic Adventures (2022) by Daniel José Older. It was revealed that issues #5-6 of the series will take place during the Battle of Jedha. Some interior art was shown as well. Older also teased that we'll learn Therm Scissorpunch's "full government name" in issue #5.
Additionally, the panel announced a collection of all the kids' comics from The High Republic that aren't part of The High Republic Adventures in Phase I.
The High Republic Adventures is getting a Free Comic Book Day issue featuring Lula Talisola. The issue's title was announced to be "Starlight Coda," and a couple of interiors from it were shown. Free Comic Book Day is May 6, 2023.
The last piece of news to come out of this panel was a sneak peek at issue #1 of The High Republic Adventures (2023), which will kick off the series' Phase III run. The art is designed like a comic cover, however it does have a banner that says that the cover isn't final. The art features Zeen Mrala and Qort.
Lucasfilm Publishing: Stories From a Galaxy Far, Far Away
The Lucasfilm Publishing panel was also hosted by Michael Siglain, who has been incredibly busy this weekend! Panelists included Kristin Baver, Adam Christopher, Amy Richau, Clayton Sandell, Cavan Scott, and Charles Soule.
To celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Return of the Jedi, the movie is getting its own installment of a From a Certain Point of View anthology book. While we've known about this book for a while and had already seen the cover and list of authors, we did get a couple more specifics about the book.
Kristin Baver will be writing a story about Sy Snootles, who was the singer in Jabba's Palace. Adam Christopher will be writing a story about Enric Pryde, who was an Allegiant General in the First Order as seen in The Rise of Skywalker and in Christopher's Shadow of the Sith book. From a Certain Point of View: Return of the Jedi is set to release on September 5, 2023.
The High Republic was briefly discussed as well. The biggest reveal had to do with a "very significant antagonist" of Phase III: General Viess from The Blade comic miniseries. This is especially notable because of the news of Vernestra Rwoh's appearance in The Acolyte from the day prior: Viess is a Mirialan who, according to our calculations, will be over 150 years old in Phase III, thereby making canonical the long lifespans of Mirialans.
Another piece of The High Republic news came in regard to the upcoming reference book from DK called The High Republic Character Encyclopedia. Written by Amy Richau and Megan Crouse, this encyclopedia will feature over 250 characters! Some interior pages were shown to the audience, confirming that it will follow the same format as previous character encyclopedias of this type. This book is set to release on November 7, 2023.
On the topic of reference books, Secrets of the Wookiees by Marc Sumerak had its cover revealed. It will follow in the tradition of other Secrets of books, and will come out on October 21, 2023.
The last announcement of the panel was about - you guessed it - another reference book! Specifically, The Art of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor from Dark Horse got its cover revealed. The book will be released on December 12, 2023.
Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Trailer
The final gameplay trailer for the upcoming video game Star Wars Jedi: Survivor was revealed at the live stage on Day 3. We see Cal Kestis and BD-1 in much of the footage, doing their thing and kicking Imperial butt. Of note, we see Cal on the planet Coruscant, as confirmed by the game's director Stig Asmussen. At one point in the trailer, Cal uses the Force to throw a stormtrooper into a TIE fighter. Several large creatures can be seen, including a Rancor.
Cere, Merrin, Greez, and new character Bode show up as well. We can even see Cal and Merrin working together to fight off the enemy. Other enemies besides stormtroopers are present, too: a large purple alien in heavy armor and droidekas. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor releases on April 28, 2023. You can watch the final trailer for yourself here.
