Skeleton Crew ends its season with not only the best episode of the series, but one of the best episodes in the history of Star Wars television.

Spoilers Ahead for Season 1 of Skeleton Crew

Lucasfilm

What we saw:

  • Picking up directly after last week’s cliffhanger, Jod introduces himself to the children’s parents as a Republic emissary and orders all of them to return home under the watch of droids - except for Fern and Fara who he takes to go meet The Supervisor.

  • Wim and Wendle head home where Wim attempts to tell his father about Jod’s true identity, but he can’t risk that revelation while they’re being watched. His backup plan to get Neel’s help is similarly foiled, so he has no choice but to wait and see what happens.

  • Jod, Fern, and Fara arrive at The Supervisor’s level which is covered in layers of dust. The Supervisor is revealed to be a massive droid who has been running the planet for years, and after it immediately uncovers Jod’s deceit, the pirate captain stabs his lightsaber through its eye causing a complete blackout of the planet.

  • With the droids out of order, Wim, KB, and Neel spring into action on their bikes to go save Fern. They are quickly joined by Wendle who initially wants to bring them home but quickly gets swept up in the adventure as the full pirate gang descends through the At Attin sky.

  • On the race to the tower, the gang splits up with Neel heading to an anti-aircraft turret (thanks to his lessons learned from Episode 4), KB setting up to pilot the Onyx Cinder through the barrier to call for help, and Wem and Windle heading to The Supervisor’s level to unlock the ship’s parking brake.

  • Upon their arrival, Wim and Fern distract Jod while Wendle reactivates the power to unlock the Onyx Cinder. While this effort works, Jod eventually rounds up both sets of parents and children as KB rockets towards the barrier with the help of a decapitated SM-33.

  • Although chased by pirates, KB makes it out of the atmosphere and immediately calls Kh’ymm for help. Kh’ymm promises that X-Wings are on their way as KB is hit by her pursuers and begins falling to the surface.

  • The Onyx Cinder crashes as Wim and Fern look on helplessly. KB’s assumed sacrifice inspires them all to jump into action, and after a united effort, they are able to shut down the barrier completely…exposing At Attin to the galaxy for the first time in years.

  • New Republic X-Wings immediately enter the atmosphere and chase away the pirate gang while also taking down Jod’s flagship. Wim, Fern, and their parents escape the tower while Jod looks at his crumbling empire with a smirk.

  • Wim, Fern, and Neel all meet at the Onyx Cinder’s crash site where they find KB on top of a pile of credits exhausted but relatively unharmed.

  • The kids reunite in a giant hug, and Wim looks up to the sky that is filled with soaring X-Wings…the light of adventure burning brightly in his eyes.

What we loved:

  • Literally everything. This episode was the best finale Star Wars has seen in years, and it delivered on every promise set up by the season thus far.

  • The mysteries of At Attin and Jod Na Nawood were both answered without sacrificing too much exposition. The reveal that Jod was only briefly trained by an Order 66 survivor makes complete sense regarding his rudimentary skills, and The Supervisor’s role in protecting At Attin from the perceived dangers of the galaxy fell right in line with the logic of the show.

  • The entire series has been filled with references to classic films of the 80s, but the image of the gang racing down the streets on bikes to save their friend was straight out of E.T.. You can’t help but cheer.

  • Wendle and Fara’s trust in their children’s newfound abilities was wonderful. Despite their desire to keep their kids safe, their competence was too obvious to ignore, and it was so much fun to see them really become part of the gang.

  • As opposed to The Acolyte’s finale, which clearly implied the need for a second season, this episode finished the crew’s story in a satisfying way despite leaving some doors open for future stories.

  • For the final time, it cannot be overstated how fantastic this cast from top to bottom. Jude Law delivered some of his best scene work throughout the episode, and his skill and charisma was matched by the children every step of the way. It has been a true joy to see them all perform on screen every single week.

What’s next:

  • This is the (literal) million dollar question. Skeleton Crew has been a beloved hit throughout the Star Wars community, but at the moment, there is no announcement of a second season. Ratings and budgets will undoubtedly affect that future choice, but in the meantime, fans can rest easy knowing that they received a full story.

  • For the characters, however, there are definitely plenty of stories left in their lives. Jod’s final smirk implies that he’s already scheming a way to get off the planet and start again. Wim’s assessment hall was destroyed by a crashing ship, but his final look says that he’ll be ending up in an X-Wing sooner rather than later.

  • At Attin’s citizens now have a choice to make. The Supervisor can likely be fixed or rebuilt if they wish, but the sky is now filled with stars and possibilities, and they surely have enough credits in tow for the galaxy to welcome them…

Skeleton Crew ends its season with an absolute triumph and solidifies itself as one of the best Star Wars shows of all time. While the future of the characters is up in the air, this completed project is a testament to the skill and passion of the cast and crew who took their time to create something truly special.

All episodes of Skeleton Crew are now streaming on Disney+
