Sana Starros
“Did you ever care about someone so much it scared ya, just to think about them?”
S

coundrel, smuggler, bounty hunter, pilot, morally ambiguous: all of these words can be used to describe the infamous Sana Starros. In an ill-fated scheme, she was married to Han Solo. Solo drew her ire when he took her money from the crime and left her. Sana’s desire to get revenge on him led her to join our main trio and friends on several adventures, even her brief employment with the Rebel Alliance.

Starros has had a long and complex history with many of our favorite characters. Most notably, Starros dated Doctor Chelli Aphra when they were students at the University of Bar’leth. She took an archeology class there, but her life took a different path compared to Aphra’s.

Sana is a fancy flier in her own right. She pilots the Volt Cobra, which, according to her, is “the ship Han wishes he had.” The Cobra has been involved in almost as many adventures as Sana herself, and has taken on almost as much damage as the Millennium Falcon itself.

Born and raised on Nar Shaddaa, AKA the “Smuggler’s Moon”, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that Starros entered a life of crime. The moon is one of the most prolific sources of bounty hunters, smugglers, and crime lords in the galaxy. But, Sana doesn’t always live up to the reputation of Nar Shaddaa: she has done a fair amount of work for the Rebel Alliance, even if that work was emotionally complex.

Sana was hired to escort Doctor Aphra to Sunspot Prison along with Princess Leia Organa. She fulfilled her responsibilities; but, due to outside hijinx, Aphra escaped. Later, General Hera Syndulla hired Starros on behalf of the Rebellion once again - but this time to break her out of Imperial prison. Once again, Sana kept her word, but the slippery Doctor Aphra escaped her grasp. Despite these objective failures, Starros maintained a working relationship with the Rebellion.

Besides her work with the Rebellion, Starros is best known for working for herself or gathering a crew to do a job. Later she and her crew got tangled up in the web of Crimson Dawn deceit, involving themselves with the Tagge Corporation. Sana proved her ability to deceive and double-cross during this period of time, always remaining loyal to who she believed was doing the right thing whilst looking out for her best interest.

Of note, Sana Starros plays a large role in both Doctor Aphra comic book series. The 2016 run won Outstanding Comic Book in the 31st Annual GLAAD Awards, and the 2020 run was nominated for the same category in the 34th Annual GLAAD Awards. The purpose of the GLAAD Awards is to “...recognize and honor media for their fair, accurate and inclusive representations of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) community and the issues that affect their lives.”

Starros is undoubtedly an important and influential character, not only in the galaxy far, far away, but also for representation here in real life. She’s finally getting her own comic miniseries: Sana Starros written by Justina Ireland, and illustrated by Pere Pérez and Jay David Ramos. The five-issue miniseries will explore her life prior to when we first meet her in the Star Wars (2015) series.

Doctor Aphra: An Audiobook Original

Written by
Sarah Kuhn
Artwork by
Since her introduction in Kieron Gillen's Darth Vader series from Marvel in 2015, Doctor Aphra caught fire in the fandom. With a morally grey rogue archeologist accompanied by murderous droids, what's not to love? Her story is filled with twists and turns, betrayal and romance, with more skin-of-your-teeth escapes than you ever thought possible, and now you can experience her introduction in a whole new way. Sarah Kuhn's adaptation of Aphra's arc in the Darth Vader comics smartly tells the story from her perspective, somehow recapping the 2015 comics without ever feeling like you were retreading old ground. This is one of the more unique, fun, and diverse stories in the galaxy.
Doctor Aphra: An Audiobook Original. It will expand upon Doctor Chelli Aphra's introduction in Marvel Comics 2015 Star Wars: Darth Vader comic series. Dr. Chelli Lona Aphra, rogue archaeologist, is in trouble again. A pioneer in the field of criminal xenoarchaeology, Aphra recognizes no law, has no fear, and possesses no impulse control. To her, the true worth of the galactic relics she discovers isn't found in a museum but in an arsenal. This viewpoint has led to a lot of misunderstandings. After her latest plan goes horribly wrong, her roguish ways are on the verge of catching up to her, when suddenly Darth Vader, terror of the galaxy, swoops in with his lightsaber ignited and...saves her life? Don’t get her wrong - it's not like she's ungrateful. Sure, her new boss is a lord of the Sith. And okay, she may have just become a pawn in a deadly game being played by him and HIS boss, who happens to be the Galactic Emperor. And yes, the life expectancy of anyone who disappoints Vader can be measured in seconds. But she's back doing what she does best. She's got a ship to fly, a heist to pull, and two unorthodox but effective metal buddies: Triple-Zero, a protocol droid specializing in etiquette, customs, translation, and torture; and BT-1, an astromech loaded with enough firepower to take down a battlecruiser. Together, they might just find a way to get the job done and avoid the deadly performance review that waits at its conclusion. Just kidding. She's doomed.

Doctor Aphra (2016) Vol. 4: The Catastraphe Con (Trade Paperback)

Written by
Simon Spurrier
Artwork by
Kev Walker

Rogue archaeologist Chelle Aphra is in hot water—an Imperial prison ship where she is close supervised at all times by guard droids. Despite her sketchy past, she might prove to be the Rebels' only hope. She teams up with a delightful crew consisting of a colorful and exesiential destroyer droid, a wimpy shapeshifter named Lopset, and ex-lovers Sana Starros and Imperial Inspector Tolvan. They’re on the run from Imperial authorities, a self-righteous lawman, the bloodthirsty droid Triple Zero, and even the psychotic ghost of a long-dead Jedi trapped in a fungus trapped in the hull of a crashed ship!

The characters of Doctor Aphra, Triple Zero, and BT-1 are first introduced in Kieron Gillen’s run on Darth Vader. When that series concluded, Aphra received her own solo series. This series is Si Spurrier’s run on these dark, twisted, and never boring characters.

Simon Spurrier takes the reins as rogue archaeologist Doctor Aphra jumps to light speed and accelerates into the next chapter of her life! Aphra is used to being in way over her head - but this time she's not alone! Who else is caught up in her latest misadventure? Let's hope they're friendly...otherwise Aphra may have finally bitten off more than she can chew!

Last Shot

Written by
Daniel José Older
Artwork by

When a common foe from Han and Lando's past shows up on the latter's doorstep, the recent hero of the Rebellion and new father to Ben Solo must rush off once more to save both his friend and possibly, the entire galaxy.

Last Shot uniquely employs a number of different eras throughout the novel, and while jumping between time periods, we get to experience Han, Lando, L3-37 and more at various points in time, allowing us to witness the maturation and evolution of our favorite characters right before our eyes.

With a host of new characters right alongside the classics, including a villain that can't help but terrify all those who encounter him, Last Shot is an essential addition to the Han Solo story.

THEN:

It’s one of the galaxy’s most dangerous secrets: a mysterious transmitter with unknown power and a reward for its discovery that most could only dream of claiming. But those who fly the Millennium Falcon throughout its infamous history aren’t your average scoundrels. Not once, but twice, the crew of the Falcon tries to claim the elusive prize—first, Lando Calrissian and the droid L3-37 at the dawn of an ambitious career, and later, a young and hungry Han Solo with the help of his copilot, Chewbacca. But the device’s creator, the volatile criminal Fyzen Gor, isn’t interested in sharing. And Gor knows how to hold a grudge. . . .

NOW:

It’s been ten years since the rebel hero Han Solo last encountered Fyzen Gor. After mounting a successful rebellion against the Empire and starting a family with an Alderaanian princess, Han hasn’t given much thought to the mad inventor. But when Lando turns up at Han’s doorstep in the middle of the night, it’s Fyzen’s assassins that he’s running from. And without Han’s help, Lando—and all life on Cloud City—will be annihilated.

With the assistance of a young hotshot pilot, an Ewok slicer prodigy, the woman who might be the love of Lando’s life, and Han’s best and furriest friend, the two most notorious scoundrels in the New Republic are working together once more. They’ll have to journey across the stars—and into the past—before Gor uses the device’s power to reshape the galaxy.
