n what has become tradition over the past few years, Star Wars fans were given a trailer for The Mandalorian Season 3 during Monday Night Football. The trailer makes it clear what the third season will be about: “I’m going to Mandalore so that I may be forgiven for my transgressions”. We’ve known that Bo-Katan will be returning and appearances of Anzellans (species of Babu Frik) were teased. The new trailer also contained new footage that revealed five more things about what we can expect:
1. The Return of Coruscant
While we have seen Coruscant in the Kenobi Series, this will be the first time seeing the city planet in live action post-Return of the Jedi. While The Mandalorian has developed some story around the New Republic, this would make it seem that we will be diving deeper into the political landscape of this era.
2. Doctor Pershing is Back
Doctor Pershing was last seen in Season 2 giving up intel about Grand Moff Gideon. Ever since his arrival, he has been surrounded by mystery. What was the purpose of his experiments on Grogu? Do these experiments connect to the storyline hinted at in The Bad Batch? With Pershing showing up in this trailer on Coruscant, it appears we will continue to explore this character and his intentions.
3. Captain Carson Teva and a Warning
“There’s something dangerous happening out there, and by the time it becomes big enough for you to act it will be too late.” While it’s comforting knowing fan-favorite X-Wing pilot Captain Teva is returning, his warning about a looming threat is ominous. Like Coruscant, this should give us more opportunities to witness the New Republic in action and explore what this new threat is. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee has been a great addition to the Star Wars family, and hopefully we continue to see him in a more expanded role this season and beyond.
4. Order 66 - Or Something Else
In a quick scene, we see what appears to be Jedi bracing for conflict with someone breaching a sealed door. This could be two different events. The first is with regard to the importance of Mandalore and the Darksaber: could we be seeing a flashback to the events described in the fifteenth episode of Season 3 of Star Wars: Rebels, “Trials of the Darksaber?” This could also be an expanded look at Grogu’s backstory during Order 66, as first seen in The Book of Boba Fett episode “From the Desert Comes a Stranger”. Before the Jedi, we do see a shot of Grogu with reflections of the Jedi’s lightsabers, so unless there is some trailer trickery, it appears we will be seeing that tragic event once again from a different point of view.
5. Grogu Confidently Uses the Force
Throughout the series, we have seen Grogu use the Force, but it usually ends in a nap from exhaustion. The trailer ends with Grogu Force-pushing an enemy with confidence and presumably without any exhaustion. While he might not have a lightsaber, Grogu will continue to grow in his Force abilities and aid Din when needed.
The best thing about a new Star Wars trailer is that it’s only a fraction of what is yet to be seen. There will be so much more to discuss when The Mandalorian Season 3 premieres on March 1 on Disney+.
